More than 6 million pets enter shelters every year. Worse yet, millions are cruelly abandoned in the woods or another area where they can’t fend for themselves. This story is about a terribly cruel abandonment: A mama dog and her newborn puppies, left on a deserted mountain trail.
When a group of hikers discovered a mama dog and her puppies in a barrel, they immediately informed the local animal rescue because they knew time was crucial in saving this family. The dogs were clearly struggling and needed expert care right away.
The rescuers rushed to the scene and were heartbroken at what they found.

A sickly-looking and terribly skinny mama dog was cradling and protecting her puppies. There were 10 puppies, but four were motionless. Those puppies, the smallest ones in the litter, were already gone when the rescuers arrived. The mama dog guarded her dead babies just as closely as her live ones, and it was clear how broken she felt.
The mama dog’s eyes spoke volumes. She was simply exhausted, hopeless, and heartbroken. But, even though she and her new family had been abandoned shortly after giving birth, she did everything she could to protect her puppies. She sensed that the new arrivals were good and caring people, and she chose to trust them. That decision saved the lives of her family.
The rescuers knew that both mama and the remaining puppies were weak, and they decided that veterinary care was the first essential step on their road to healing.

Once safe in the veterinary hospital, the mama dog and her puppies started a slow recovery. But, sadly, one puppy was too sickly and couldn’t be saved. He traveled to the Rainbow Bridge shortly after their arrival, which made his mom even sadder.
Soon, she suffered a medical setback of her own: She had a life-threatening infection and needed urgent surgery. Fortunately, the surgery was successful. The veterinary team expertly treated the infection and the mama dog was stable and recovering well.
All the mama dog wanted after surgery was to be with her puppies and care for them. The small family snuggled all day long, but they did start to enjoy the attention of their caregivers. The mama dog and her puppies started to show their personalities and the veterinary team found it incredibly rewarding to see the family blossom so beautifully after having such a terrible beginning.

Newly christened Amelia, the beautiful girl started to look happier and more hopeful. Her puppies became spunkier, happier, and more active by the day as well.
Amelia developed a particularly special bond with one of her caregivers at the veterinary hospital, and they adopted her. Now, she has a forever home where she is always valued, treated well, and loved. Every one of the puppies got a carefully-chosen loving home, and Amelia is so proud of how well she raised her furry family.
