Although it’s a painful statistic to see, more than 3.9 million dogs are abandoned each year. Only 10% of them will find a permanent home, with many of the animals left to fend for themselves on the streets.
It’s impossible to know why some humans give up their pets. Some claim it’s because of rising costs, while others deal with unexpected job losses or life changes.
All the same, their pets love them anyway.
And that’s what makes Roy’s story so heartbreaking.
Roy’s Rainy Night
“I’m sitting with a dog, come and help him.”
That was all the information given to dog rescuer prosto_zhivi. She had been told about a dog sitting motionless in a nearby parking lot. He refused to move from his spot by the road.
“When I got there, I just saw this dog sitting in the rain,” she said. “His neck still had a collar, [but] he was abandoned.”

The woman who had placed the call was now long gone. The rescuer couldn’t help but wonder if she was the same person who abandoned the dog.
“Who was the woman calling me? Was she his owner? There were so many questions,” the rescuer said. “Or was [the lady] in a hurry and had to leave the dog there?”
The rescuer would never receive any answers.
Finding Help and Hope
The young border collie was clearly in shock. He was hesitant to go with his rescuer for help — and didn’t seem happy to ride in the car.
“He kept looking out the window,” Roy’s rescuer said. “How could I tell him what was going on?”

The rescuer took Roy to a local vet, who quickly discovered some minor injuries on his paws. After a few days of observation and a touch of medication, he was cleared to return to his rescuer’s home.
But Roy’s health battles were not yet over: a few days later, he came down with a high fever. The rescuer immediately returned him to the vet in hopes of saving his life yet again.

The vet didn’t expect Roy to pull through the night. But with love and medication, he made a miraculous recovery.
This marked a turning point between Roy and his rescuer. They were no longer just acquaintances, but true friends and companions.
Roy’s New Home
After so many bumps on the road to recovery, Roy’s one-time rescuer made the decision to become his owner. The pair had grown much closer over time, and just months after the rescue, were completely inseparable.
“With [Roy] by our side, we find life to be more meaningful,” his rescuer said to YouTube channel Animal Shelter. “We’ll spend many happy days together, of that I am sure.”
