Weeks without adopter interest can be discouraging to both dogs and their caregivers. That’s why it takes the work of true dog-lovers to find every pup a home.
In fact, it takes an average of 42 days for dogs at the shelter to find forever homes. But for pups like Major, the wait may be much longer — even if there isn’t a valid reason why!
The folks at Naperville Area Humane Society refused to let Major slip through the cracks. That’s why their caring team fought tirelessly for years to find him a happy forever home.
Meet Major

Major and Hilo were two friendly pitbulls rescued from the streets of Quincy, Illinois. But because the local shelter wasn’t a no-kill establishment, the NAHS decided to step in to help.
Both Major and Hilo were saved from euthanasia and given plenty of love at the NAHS shelter. Major in particular was kind, friendly, and playful, which quickly made him a favorite of both staffers and volunteers.

But what the team couldn’t understand was why Major was getting overlooked. As the months went by and the seasons changed, nobody showed interest in the friendly dog.
So they decided to shoot a special video to highlight the dog’s 365-day milestone. This caught the attention of a truck driver named Jose — the man who would one day become Major’s new best friend.
Jose’s Wish
Jose spent lots of time on the road and was used to traveling with a furry companion. With the passing of his faithful friend a few months prior, he found it difficult to find the companionship he had before.

Jose saw the video of Major and immediately contacted the NAHS. The two of them clicked right away — it was simply meant to be.
An Adventure Every Day
When Jose officially decided to adopt Major, the entire staff at NAHS threw a going away party. Each of the volunteers said goodbye one by one, encouraging Major to enjoy his new life.
Today, Major and Jose go on new adventures every day. Major is settling into life as a certified ‘road dog,’ spending most of his nights cuddled up in bed.

“We just heard from Major’s new dad that Major is doing GREAT,” the NAHS said on Facebook. “Major can jump out of the truck by himself now and LOVES to snuggle with his new owner at night in the cabin. We are so thrilled to hear that Major is enjoying his exciting life on the road.”
